Work From Home – The New Era of Entrepreneurship

If you’re now considering working jobs from home instead of from an office cubicle somewhere, you’re certainly not alone in your thinking today. Despite the fact that the U.S. economy is still on shaky ground and that national employment numbers don’t appear to be improving much, “work from home” opportunities have literally exploded in number and have become the hottest employment options today.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics stated recently that:

- Over 20 million home-based business workers in the U.S. generate more than $430 billion in annual revenue

- A full 52 percent of all small businesses are now based in the home.

- Every 11 seconds, someone starts another home-based business here in the U.S.

- One quarter of all home businesses accounts for all of their owners’ annual income.

- The average telecommuter or home worker is productive for a little more than 7 hours of each 8 hour day, while the average on-site office worker is productive for less than 6 hours.

Why is there this proliferation of work-at-home jobs all of a sudden? Several important factors today are behind this major shift in how American business is being performed:

Economic pressures on business. As many businesses continue to be challenged economically by today’s lengthening recession, business owners are looking for ways to further reduce their companies’ expenses in order to help keep them viable. Providing space, furniture, parking, utilities, and the many other fixed costs of having on-site workers adds up quickly, so if they can avoid those expenses while still being able to retain their workforce, they will.

Computers and the Internet. Let’s face it – our world changed forever with the introduction of personal computers and high-speed internet access. The internet is transforming how business is conducted today, just as Henry Ford’s assembly line catapulted our agricultural economy into an industrialized one. Cheap, easy-to-use, and widely available computers and broadband internet access are the primary tools of business today – and now they can also be found in just about any residence in the country.

The demographics of today’s worker. Yesterday’s workers prized job security, predictability, and longevity over many other possible attributes of the workplace, frequently finding themselves working for a single employer or perhaps two over the full course of their careers. Today’s worker, by contrast, has grown up surrounded by all this highly enabling technology, and intuitively understands that it has never been a more entrepreneurial time in this nation’s history than now. They want more than just a paycheck; they want job satisfaction, flexibility, and the ability to express themselves professionally.

What you don’t spend, you essentially save. Have you ever taken the time to determine just how much your current or past office jobs have actually cost you? Most people would be absolutely shocked if they knew how large a part of their paycheck gets spent on clothing, transportation, meals, parking, and the other expenses that come with holding down an office job. And just how much time – the most valuable resource of all – would you keep for yourself if you didn’t have to make that daily commute?

This trend toward home-based workers is expected to continue to grow significantly for the foreseeable future. For the many people currently considering something other than a typical 8 – 5 office job routine, now is by far the best time to consider a home-based job. There have never been more great working jobs from home out there than right now!

Wanting to leave her unpleasant office job but afraid to do it during this lengthy recession, Monica Limpasas heard that working jobs from home instead were becoming THE hot new employment option. She spent some time recently to research and write about the various types of jobs: writer, proofreader, transcriptionist, and others that job-seekers are really doing these days.
